Belgium and France dry

Southwest finally served with rain

12 July 2017 - Niels van der Boom

Finally, farmers in the southwest of the Netherlands are served with serious precipitation. Where the map with the precipitation deficit turned increasingly red, the weather today brings relief. In Belgium, it is mainly the provinces of Antwerp and Limburg that are treated to rain.

The southwestern part of the Netherlands will have to manage with the least amount of rain this year. In the west of Zeeuws Vlaanderen, the precipitation deficit has risen to 1mm since 300 April, according to the KNMI. It is not much different on the Zeeland and South Holland Islands. There, the continuous deficit fluctuates between 180 and 240 mm.

70

millimetres

fell locally on Goeree-Overflakkee

Dryer weather is forecast in the second half of the afternoon. This means that the counter even exceeds 70 mm in some places, such as on Goeree-Overflakkee. However, the differences can be large, even at a few kilometers. Further south, in West Flanders, the weather maps show considerably less precipitation. The province is perhaps the driest part of Western Europe at the moment. Farmers crave rain. Below the Dutch border, the counter comes to a narrow 20 mm. Towards France it does not go further than 6 to 8mm.

Belgium and France remain dry
In the important potato growing areas of Belgium and Northern France, little rain is expected in the next 2 weeks. According to insider reports, Wallonia is in fairly good shape. The situation remains dire, especially in the coastal region and in France. Occasional showers are forecast for the next 14 days. The only advantage is that the temperature does not exceed 20 degrees. In France the differences are extreme. Last weekend Paris was treated to the most rainfall since 1880. 50mm fell in an hour.

Flevoland divided
Further to the north of the Netherlands, the precipitation front weakens. Here, too, there are sometimes large local differences. Southern Flevoland records 12mm, while the west of the Noordoostpolder exceeds 30mm. Despite the fact that Flevoland was still well supplied with precipitation at the end of June, farmers could also use a shower here. In the northeast there is an average of 10mm of precipitation, but the urgency is probably lower.

Thirst weather coming
Also for the Netherlands, weather services will note a lot of zeros in the next 2 weeks, with a temperature that climbs to 26 degrees with little wind. The weather forecast is therefore at least favorable for the grain harvest. It is in the starting blocks in the southwest of the Netherlands.

The center of gravity of the showers Wednesday morning will be in the southwest. Up to 70mm in Oude-Tonge, on Goeree-Overflakkee (ZH).

The precipitation pattern largely follows the map with the deficit. Farmers in Zeeuws Vlaanderen can probably still use the double precipitation sum.

The map of Europe clearly shows where the center of the rain showers was.

Apart from the coastal strip, no significant rain has fallen in France.
