Drought until autumn

Restriction on water consumption in Northern France

20 July 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The precipitation deficit in the north of France is not going to decrease. This is mainly due to the sporadic rain showers in recent weeks. The authorities in northern France do not expect things to get much better, at least until the autumn. That is why there are restrictions on water consumption in Northern France.

The departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais have the emergency measure introduced to prevent further damage to nature. The measure was taken in consultation with farmers and the industry. Furthermore, the measure must ensure that the water supplies are not completely drained.

Reduce water consumption
In concrete terms, the restrictions imposed by the Northern French government mean that farmers and industry are being asked to reduce water consumption by approximately 10%. For the agricultural sector, this also means there will be a ban on irrigating in the hottest hours, from 11 a.m. to 00 p.m.

Not only in the north of the country, but also in the east, many fields are drier than usual as a result of the prolonged drought. The video below from France3 shows potato growers in Alsace seeing their crops turn yellow.
