Farming business is getting bigger

In 2016, the Netherlands had almost 56.000 agricultural and horticultural companies. That is a decrease of 43% compared to 2000. However, the surface area of ​​agricultural and horticultural land has only decreased by 9%. This means that the companies have grown in size. That reports the CBS. 

In 2016, about 22% of farms had more than 50 hectares of agricultural land. In 2000 that was only 9%. The number of companies with more than 100 hectares has also increased considerably. In 2016 5% of farms had more than 100 hectares, in 2000 it was only 1%.

The typical revenue of an average company increased by approximately 2000% between 2016 and 123 to €433.000. There are, however, large differences in increase between the various sectors. 

In the case of loft farms, the increase is 202%, followed by livestock farms with an increase of 156%. The grazing livestock farms show an increase of 153%. The smallest increase is for arable farms. They only show an increase of 91%. 

The labor commitment to a company has increased by 26%. Labor productivity has increased considerably in most sectors.
