AgruniekRijnvallei (AR) started supplying GMO-free feed at the end of July. The factory in Winterswijk has recently been prepared to be able to supply cattle feed according to the VLOG standard. That factory will supply GMO-free feed for both AR and Vitelia.
AgruniekRijnvallei has been supplying GMO-free feed to poultry farmers for a number of years. Since recently, cattle farmers have also been able to contact AR for this. The company wants to anticipate the demand from the dairy industry for milk from cows that are fed with GMO-free feed.
Cattle farmers who choose to produce milk with feed that is free of genetic engineering receive an extra supplement on the milk they supply.
GMO-free food
Livestock farmers who want to supply VLOG milk must purchase feed that meets the VLOG standard. This means that the food must be free of genetic engineering. The VLOG market in the Netherlands is currently still in a pilot phase.
However, there are signs that VLOG will be increasingly requested. This is mainly because GMO-free is a hot topic for discussion in Germany. Since the Netherlands is an export country and a lot of dairy goes to Germany, AR cannot ignore this question.
GMO-free increasingly popular
Other companies have already started supplying GMO-free products. That's how it started Agrifirm already with GMO-free food at the end of April and is FrieslandCampina started a trial of GMO-free cheese.
