Business risk

Poultry farmers pay for the costs themselves

3 August 2017 - Kimberly Bakker - 1 reaction

The poultry farmers affected by the Fipronil scandal ultimately bear the costs themselves. The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced this on Thursday 3 August.

The poultry farmers, of which eggs bleaching infected with fipronil, cannot count on government support. The Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced that this falls under a business risk.

It's a business risk

Different situation
There are situations in which the government does offer financial support to those affected, such as with the bird group. That is different, because then it is a so-called disease that requires control. This means that animals must be culled as a result. The problems surrounding fipronil are seen as a private matter, for which the ministry has no funds.

No dangers
The eggs contaminated with fipronil were taken off the shelves en masse. However, they do not pose a direct threat to public health. That is what Eric Hubers, chairman of the Poultry Farming Department at LTO Netherlands, says in an interview with Boerenbusiness† Hubers also indicated that he already assumed that the poultry farmers themselves would have to pay for the costs.

It's a shame that the entire livestock industry doesn't pay for it
It's time we help each other instead of letting each other play out!
