Fipronil crisis leads to house searches

The fipronil crisis has led to house searches in various places in the Netherlands and Belgium. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced this on Thursday 10 August. 

The Public Prosecution Service also states that it concerns a joint action between Belgium and the Netherlands. Eight house searches were carried out in the Netherlands and 8 in Belgium.

The Netherlands has waited too long to share information

Research
The searches follow a day after Belgium and the Netherlands discussed the responsibilities of the fipronil crisis. The Belgian minister stated on Wednesday 9 August that the Netherlands had known about the use of fipronil in poultry farms since November 2016. According to the Belgian minister, the Netherlands has waited too long to share that information.

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has admitted that tips have been received. However, he also announced that there was no indication that the eggs could actually contain fipronil.

The 10 owners of ChickFriend were also arrested on Thursday, August 2. They are suspected of endangering public health by supplying fipronil in houses with laying hens. 

Damage runs into millions of euros
The damage to the poultry sector as a result of the scandal amounts to at least €150 million. In addition, the companies also have to deal with reputational damage and the costs of this are difficult to calculate.
