11 August 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

At least 17 countries have had to deal with fipronil eggs. It concerns 15 European countries, but Hong Kong and Switzerland have also been affected. The European Commission (EC) announced this at a press conference on Friday 11 August.

The press conference revealed that Germany, France, Sweden, Great Britain, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Denmark also sold contaminated eggs.

France
The French Ministry of Agriculture also gave a response on Friday 11 August. This shows that almost a quarter of a million infected eggs have been sold in the country. Most of it has probably already been consumed. However, the French ministry emphasizes that there are only minimal health risks associated with this.

Quarter of a million infected eggs sold

The eggs are originally from Belgium and the Netherlands. The French ministry has had the infected eggs, which were still in the store, removed. The farms in France where egg products are made will be further investigated in the coming days.

The French started an investigation into fipronil in French eggs last week. Earlier, a poultry farm in the northern department of Pas-de-Calais was also placed under surveillance.

Top meeting
The European Commission also announced a top meeting wanting about the crisis. EU Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said in a statement that he wanted to end the disputes and accusations.
