Improving animal welfare

Mandatory cameras in slaughterhouses in England

14 August 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

Slaughterhouses in the UK will soon be required to install security cameras. This should improve animal welfare in the country. In addition, the aim is to provide consumers with more insight into the slaughter process.

These standards should enhance the UK's position as a global leader in animal welfare. According to Michael Gove, secretary for the environment, this will mainly happen because the Food Standards Agency, those who monitor and enforce the standards, will have access to the images.

Violations become more punishable

Consequences of Violation
The consequences of a violation also increase. For example, violations can lead to a law enforcement notice, suspension or revocation of personnel licenses and/or the initiation of a criminal investigation.

The first slaughterhouses to be fitted with security cameras are the poultry slaughterhouses. The slaughterhouses for cattle, pigs and horses will also follow in the coming year.
