More clarity about GBM ban

14 August 2017 - Niels van der Boom

The European Commission has released more information about how the ban on plant protection products in Ecological Focus Areas (EA) will be enforced during cultivation year 2018.

The ban on plant protection products in Ecological Focus Areas, including those in crops such as alfalfa, field beans and soy, has been a major challenge. In mid-June this became news published by the European Commission. A clarification of the exact plans will follow on Monday 14 August, Farmers Weekly writes.

Seed coating also falls under the GBM ban

New rules also for 2018
The new greening rules will officially come into effect on 1 January 2018. However, in some cases it can already have an effect. If a protein crop is sown before January 1, the new rules will already apply in 2017. This can already have major consequences for winter field beans and alfalfa, among other things. In addition to PPPs, it is also prohibited to use a seed coating.

Mixtures allowed
Farmers who want to sow a nitrogen-fixing crop can also sow a mix of several varieties under the new rules. The Ecological Focus Area no longer assumes a monoculture. Those who prefer to sow a mixture with non-nitrogen-binding species can also do this. At least 50% of the mix must consist of leguminous species.
