On Tuesday 15 August, Cosun opened up the possibility to order sugar beet seed for the 2018 harvest. It is possible to place an order until Tuesday 5 September at the latest. The early order discount is €11 to €25 per pack. By ordering standard seed, considerable additional savings can be made.
An advisory schedule helps beet growers to choose the right variety, depending on the expected disease or pest. There are 7 categories, each with a specific resistance or combination of resistances. The disadvantage of the early order is that the choice of varieties has to be determined on the basis of figures up to 2016. The latest figures will only be known in November. The figures for new varieties in particular can vary greatly from year to year.
Decision scheme
To assess whether it is worth waiting, Cosun has drawn up a decision chart. For the financial yield of a variety, 1 percentage point is equal to €30 per hectare. Waiting for a new variety, with a higher financial yield, can therefore yield a greater advantage than the early order discount.
Waiting or ordering
No new or better varieties are expected for the categories rhizoctonia and beet cyst nematodes and standard rhizomania. Cosun recommends ordering early for this category. New varieties are expected for additional rhizomania resistance. Candidate varieties can be ordered in December, if available, but usually to a limited extent.
Extra savings
Cosun also says that it might be wise to choose part of the current range and still receive a price discount. Ordered beet seed cannot be returned.
For those who want to save extra money, it has IRS one more tip. It is not required to sow special pill seed in all growing regions. If you order standard seed, you can save €44 per pack. This is interesting for beet growers in the east and south-east of the Netherlands. This is not the case in the west, north and extreme south of the Netherlands. This also applies to Flevoland.
