The House of Representatives will return from the recess early to discuss the fipronil crisis. Several parties have requested this. Among other things, they want clarity about the parliamentary questions asked.
The Party of the Animals is the initiator of the parliamentary debate. This party wants to meet in particular about the state of affairs at the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). CDA and VVD initially did not agree with the consultation, but now agree.
As a result, a majority has now been formed for the consultation and will be held next week.
Questions about Chickfriend
The parliamentary questions include questions about Chickfriend. For example, the parties want to know why Chickfriend was able to continue with the treatments against red mite after the first report of fipronil on 19 June. "Earlier shutdown was not legally possible," said State Secretary Martijn van Dam.
In addition, the NVWA's conduct should be discussed in the parliamentary debate. Why did it take so long for the Commodities Authority to intervene? The parties from the House of Representatives demand a complete timeline of what has happened in recent months. Martijn van Dam has announced that this investigation will be completed before the end of the year.
There must also be a clear answer to how the government can support the sector during this period. The rest of the parliamentary questions will be discussed next week in the discussion between the participating parties.
Owners are stuck
The 2 owners of poultry service company Chickfriend were arrested on 10 August. They will remain in custody for the time being.
