Exports to the United Kingdom (UK) have fallen considerably in the past six months. On the other hand, exports of agricultural products to the UK did increase. Statistics Netherlands reported this on Friday, August 18.
Goods exports from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom decreased by 2017% in the first half of 7, compared to 2016. This brings total exports to a value of €9,9 billion.
The trend of the agricultural sector is at odds with the trend of general exports to the United Kingdom. According to ABN Amro, 10% of Dutch agri and food products go to the United Kingdom.
Dairy imports on the rise
The export of dairy products from the Netherlands is €42 million higher than in the first half of 2016. In England, a bad price was paid for milk last year. As a result, the UK dairy herd has shrunk and milk production has fallen.
Since British consumption remains the same, it has to be imported from another country. This explains the growing export from the Netherlands. Yet will the brexit will hurt the Dutch dairy sector a lot.
Pork imports higher
Pork imports are also increasing. This is reported by the British Product Board for Pig Farming (AHDB Pork). In the first quarter of 2017, compared to 2016, a significant increase was observed. For example, fresh pork rises by no less than 23% and the import of sausages increases by 8%. Imports of processed meat increased by 19% compared to the first half of 2016.
