Competition at stake

Bayer and Monsanto deal in jeopardy

22 August 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

For the time being, the deal between Bayer and Monsanto is not yet going through. The competition authority of the European Commission fears that competition will disappear in plant protection products against weeds and in products that are resistant to certain products.

The German chemical company Bayer wants to acquire the American Monsanto for €60 billion. Both companies have already made concessions to address the objections, but these are assessed as insufficient by the competition authority in Brussels, the company reports. commissie Tuesday, August 22.

Europe wants to make sure that there is real competition

Roundup
An acquisition would create the largest seed and pesticide company in the world. The activities of the 2 concerns overlap on several fronts. For example, Bayer offers one of the few alternatives to Monsanto's Roundup.

Competitive prices
Exploratory research indicates that the transaction could lead to higher prices and less choice, quality and innovation. Europe wants to make sure that there is competition, so that farmers can access innovative products, better quality and buy products at competitive prices.

Impact of merger on agricultural data
It is striking that the consequences in the digital field are also being examined more closely. The bundling of this data may put farmers in a dependency relationship. The Commission will now conduct an in-depth investigation and will make a decision by 8 January 2018.
