The government does not allocate money to poultry farmers who have suffered damage as a result of the fipronil crisis. This was announced by the interest groups LTO/NOP and NVP on Wednesday 23 August.
They estimate the damage among poultry farmers at approximately €50 million. The consequential damage may be a multiple of this. The government has arranged for the affected poultry farmers to be granted a postponement of payment of government levies. A research budget of €200.000 has also been made available.
Disappointed
The representatives say they are disappointed and fear that some of the companies will go bankrupt. They believe that the Dutch poultry sector is the victim of a poultry service company that used the banned substance fipronil in their stables without the victims' knowledge.
Business risk
When the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) millions of eggs have been destroyed or sent back. This also involved eggs that were 100% free of fipronil. According to the trade associations, the consequences are very large and do not belong to the normal business risk of poultry farmers.
The Belgian government has now announced that it will financially support the affected Belgian poultry farmers.
emergency debate
Thursday 24 August debates the House of Representatives in an emergency debate on the fipronil crisis. LTO/NOP and NVP are advocating for members of the House of Representatives to instruct the State Secretary to make a package of support measures available. They believe that the damage was partly caused by government actions.
