Subsidy for manure storage and buffer strips

4 September 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

From today, Monday 4 September, farmers in Gelderland can apply for a subsidy for investments that contribute to improving water quality. Applications can be submitted up to and including Tuesday 31 October.

The agricultural entrepreneurs in Gelderland can qualify for the subsidy 'Physical Investments and Modernization of Agricultural Enterprises'. They may use the subsidy for investments that contribute to the improvement of surface water. It is important here that the investments must contribute to a lower consumption of raw materials or a closed cycle.

"The subsidy focuses mainly on improving the quality of ground and surface water. The quality of the water is important because it influences soil quality, nature and diversity of species," says Edeserved Gunsing, province of Gelderland.

Investments must contribute to sustainability

Sustainability matters
It is also very important that the investments contribute to a sustainable way of production. Examples are: manure storage, mechanical weed control, buffer strips along ditches or precision fertilization.

The province is expected to receive most applications for precision fertilization or manure storage.

Budget distributed over water boards
The province of Gelderland has 3 water boards. Each of these water boards will receive a maximum subsidy of €170.000. With the subsidy, an entrepreneur has the opportunity to receive a subsidy of 40% of the investment.

However, those costs must be at least €10.000 per application. If the amount is lower, you are not eligible for a subsidy.

Meet selection criteria
A number of criteria are used to determine whether an entrepreneur qualifies for the subsidy.

The 4 criteria are:

  1. The cost-effectiveness of the investment.
  2. The effectiveness of the investment.
  3. The probability of success of the investment.
  4. The innovativeness of the investment.

In addition, the above criteria have different weighting factors, with a score of 19,8 points to be eligible for a subsidy. If you score lower, you will not be eligible for the subsidy.
