Countus Agriculture Index

Arable farming index continues to decline

6 September 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The free fall, which was visible in the arable farming index in July, could not be stopped in August. The number of points deteriorated mainly due to the falling prices of seed potatoes, potatoes and onions.

The average level of the Countus arable index barely reaches 62 points in August. Although the trendline was already falling, the second half of August suddenly goes fast. The cause is the price decreases in 3 crops.

Improvement far away
Things are not going well on the ware potato market. The market price of €9 and sometimes €10 applies in the first weeks of August.

However, halfway through the month the potato forward contract decreases towards €8 and later €7. An improvement in the mood seems a long way off at the moment. On Tuesday, September 4, the April 2018 contract will be €13 at 15:7,20 PM.

Onion sales are not reflected in price
The new sales season for onions can be called special: there is export, but this is not reflected in the pricing. There is a harder transition downwards visible. Until week 32, the market rose to €8,50 per 100 kilos, but in the 2 weeks after that the euros flew off. At the end of August, a position of slightly above €5 will be reached. Due to the weak mood that has been issued, there is no turning point in the short term.

There is little new under the sun in EU feed wheat: the quotation starts the month at €170 per tonne and ends at €164. Judging by the worldwide developments in wheat, it is not obvious that a significant step up will be taken here in the foreseeable future.
