Who should become Minister of Agriculture?

8 September 2017 - Wouter Baan - 43 comments

From 1905 to 2010, the Netherlands had a Ministry of Agriculture. In the Rutte I cabinet, this ministry was cut back and merged with Economic Affairs. According to various sources, a minister of agriculture will again take place in the Rutte III cabinet. Who do you think should be the next Agriculture Minister?

Carla Dik-Faber (Christian Union)
Carla Dik-Faber (1971) has been a member of the House of Representatives for several years now. Before that, she held a council position in Veenendaal. She was also a member of the Provincial Council of Utrecht. Dik-Faber is, among other things, agricultural spokesperson for the ChristenUnie in The Hague.

The Dutch are alienated from agriculture

According to Dik-Faber Dutch citizens are increasingly alienated from the agricultural sector. That is why she argues in favor of structurally embedding farming in education. Dik-Faber regularly shares her vision on agriculture in various media. She believes, for example, that rent prices in the Netherlands are bizarrely high.

After Gerda Verburg (CDA), Dik-Faber could become the second 'female foreman' of Dutch agriculture.

Jaco Geurts (CDA)
Jaco Geurts (1970) is a member of parliament at the CDA and, as spokesperson, is responsible for the sectors of agriculture, fisheries and the environment, among other things. After his wedding, he went to work in pig farming, his business eventually being hit by foot-and-mouth disease. That ensured that he became a councilor at the Dutch Pig Farmers Union (NVV).

In 2006 geurts place in the city council of Barneveld. After a conversation with Annie Schreijer-Pierik, he also ended up in the House of Representatives, in the meantime he has been a Member of Parliament since 2012. Geurts himself says that he is "familiar with all aspects of the agricultural sector".

Helma Lodders (VVD)
Helma Lodders (1968) has been a member of parliament at the VVD since 2010. In addition, she is currently also spokesperson for the agriculture and pensions sectors. Since September 2014, she has also been chair of the Committee on Health, Welfare and Sport.

Lodders is known in the political arena

Before she took office in the House of Representatives, Lodders from 2002 to 2008 he was alderman for Economic Affairs in Zeewolde. She then worked until 2012 as spokesperson for Nature Policy and Labor Market Policy.

That makes her known in the political arena and therefore suitable for the position of Minister of Agriculture.

Tjeerd de Groot (D66)
Tjeerd de Groot (1968) is a member of parliament at D66 and manages the portfolio of agriculture and fisheries, nature, animal welfare and food. He made his debut in the House of Representatives this year.

The former director of the Dutch Dairy Organization (NZO) has a lot of experience in agricultural policy. In the past, for example, he was political advisor to former agriculture minister Laurens Jan Brinkhorst.

He also worked as a policy officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. Given his affinity with agriculture and his administrative experience, De groot be seen as an outsider to the ministry.

Maurits von Martels (CDA)
Maurits von Martels (1960) is a member of the CDA. He is a spokesperson for the environment, greenhouse horticulture, biotechnology and biofuels sectors. Since 2010 he has been active as an alderman in the Dalfsen city council.

Preferred votes gave him a place in the Chamber

He suddenly became popular with his letter to the House of Representatives about common sense. His preferential votes brought him a seat in the House, where he gave his first speech on 17 May. Because von Martels has a good and practical view of dairy farming, he could be a good Minister of Agriculture.

Uri Rosenthal (VVD)
Maybe become a VVD member Uri Rosenthal (1945) was put forward as Minister of Agriculture. Rosenthal knows the laws of politics like no other and is a familiar face in the courtyard.

Between 2010 and 2012, he was already Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rutte I cabinet. In recent years, Rosenthal has emerged as an ambassador for Dutch pig farming. Since 2016 he has been chairman of the Coalition Vitalization Pig Farming.

Rosenthal is by far the most experienced minister of all potential candidates.

Very little information about relevant persons to determine choice.
A proposal round to indicate what they stand for and go for, (which subsequently does not come true) might simplify the choice.

Dear DD,

Around the time of the elections to the House of Representatives, we had interviews with all these people about their positions. You can view these by clicking on the links in the article.

Maybe that will help you make a choice!

Dear people,
let's!! if we could have influence at all!! Becoming someone with multiple roots. CU and the male nomination of the VVD have a broader picture of knowledge than the one-sided knowledge of sectors and policy regulations over the years.
Agri-Food-Nature should become a joint part of the ministry, I think
Peter 8 September 2017
Gert Jan van Noordwijk.
Prominent VVD member.
Current President of GAFTA (Grain and Feed Trade Association) in London. Former chairman of the Royal Association The Committee of Grain Traders.
Has a lot of experience in agriculture.
Maas van den Heuvel 8 September 2017
BOERENBUSINESS makes the same fallacy as many do to fish in the pond of members of the House of Representatives.
But appoint a specialist minister who has a lot of international experience and who knows agriculture like the back of their hand.
As an example, I mention Henny Swinkels (Van Drie Group) or Jos van Campen (formerly vz Cosum)

The majority of these candidates do not exceed the level of the local council. Why not a blank candidate who is not inhibited by any foreknowledge. Someone like Jeanine Hennis?
Jan 8 September 2017
Take someone who has never been a civil servant
herm. 8 September 2017
In any case, not one of the left parties that would be a disaster for the agricultural sector.
Iron 8 September 2017
Delicious out of the box" Thinking with the proposed candidates.
I can do it!! As long as they are people with practical experience and knowledge. Which, which I think is just as important, can make the good civil servants around them more aware of the Quality and presence of agriculture in our Economy and Environment outside the urban area.

This post is probably intended for CU, but are there any good candidates there? D66 and VVD will find other areas more important than this glorified state secretary. Verburg and Bleker seem to be poking at The Hague for a few years. Keurentjes is also suitable, but he has just become chairman of FC.. What do the bookmakers do?
hans 8 September 2017
Herm, what disaster could you think of that is worse than what happened to Dutch agriculture over the past 20 years under Christian-liberal policies?
Jan 8 September 2017
Miz someone who already has experience in the European Parliament.
Annie Schreijer-Pierik amply meets this requirement.

NOT ALLOWED 8 September 2017
please don't Verburg and Bleker!! Then it's going to be mess again
Henk Bruins 8 September 2017
It is positive that a new minister of agriculture will be appointed.
It should be someone from the agricultural industry .
A heavyweight who knows this world and our global position.

The 6 candidates will not live up to that.

You have to search deeper .
The farmer 8 September 2017
All mediocre, we need someone with vision and not out of daily politics.
Sybe Schaap or Louise Fresco in other words.
hans 8 September 2017
Henk Bruins, someone from the agricultural business community? Nothing needs to change for the agricultural business community. The primary farmer is having a hard time, see the decreasing number of active farmers. Let a social person represent the farmer, there is enough to divide. Demand your position within society, just like employees, the unemployed, civil servants and everyone else has their position.
hakeem 8 September 2017
Uri Rosenthal is , if I calculate quickly , 72 years old . doesn't seem like a good plan to me.
LTO 8 September 2017
I say Marc Calon as a kind of 2nd Martijn van Dam. Calon is not there for the farmers either.
Committed 8 September 2017
Gerard Doornbos, former agricultural foreman, dike warden, chairman Veldleeuwerik
Farmer Joop 8 September 2017
Helma Lodders did not want the Ministry of Agriculture needed for anything, she recently said in an interview. Dan does not need to get that post either.
rare 9 September 2017
Henk Bleker, Annie Schreier, Gertjan Oplaat, Hennie de Haan. And, why should he/she have to come from the coalition parties?, Theo Hiddema is also someone who likes to tackle......

A foreigner as a minister seems better to me, at least there they still have respect for Dutch agriculture.
Jan 9 September 2017
Sybe Schaap, that's a good one. Paler too. Was there very short...
Willem 9 September 2017
Gerard Doornbos

He didn't, it was a disaster during the foot and mouth culling because he was completely unaware of the European regulations
January 9 September 2017
As long as it doesn't become d66 I haven't forgotten Brinkhorst!!!!!!
sober 9 September 2017
No CU, no D66. Let it be someone from the CDA. Up to now, we have kept our backs straight when it comes to agricultural policy.

To be honest, the cabinets with the CDA in them were not the least for the farmers. (not my party)
CDA not 9 September 2017
The CDA will not burn its fingers. They have just come out of a deep valley. The heavy postal agriculture will not contribute to that to be able to climb further
farmer 9 September 2017
Albert-Jan Mate.
hans 9 September 2017
Happy piglet, the farmer has only been able to sustain in recent decades by growing, more production per man, with the hours, inflation and risk never being compensated. This in contrast to the worker or civil servant, who all have fewer hours for more earnings. All these years, except purple, under Christian policy.
anja 9 September 2017
Louise Fresco, I would say, seems like a top minister, erudite, knowledgeable, world woman.
Erik 9 September 2017
Take smart someone from CDA circles by Annie Schreijer Pierik. Jaco Geurts is also a good choice. But it must be someone of high education and knowledge environmental laws, Europe agriculture foreign and trade. But a feeling with farmers and agriculture. There are very good young advisers walking around in CDA with our Annie and Jaco. Let them come to the Ministry of Agriculture together with a good minister without its own green-left agenda. Also runs well, but is it still political? No loose (f) lodders. Vvd did too little for farmers. Rather than ChristenUnie or SGP
DAVID 10 September 2017
someone has to sit see hold on and bite into it and certainly not blow along with everything rise high for the sector that has been completely snowed under in recent years and pitt bull with smart and well-thought-out steps for the sector that we can move forward with and that regulatory burden has been halved runs out of scuppers
Joep 10 September 2017
Tjeerd de Groot certainly not. The destruction by Brinkhorst is still
fresh in our minds. If this man was involved.

I would consider Elbert Dijkgraaf a very good candidate
EL-PE 11 September 2017
only CDA members are eligible. other parties have absolutely nothing to do with agriculture, vvd has had the agricultural file refurbished by the PvdA over the past four years The VVD also directed the disappearance of red diesel, the dismantling of the product boards Huge increase in the insurance tax, which has cost agriculture a lot of money. So only a CDA for this post, but no Ministry of Agriculture.

Hans Wiegel was at WNL and he did not say no to the question whether he was a candidate. seems fine to me!!
Johan 11 September 2017
Jan jacob van Dijk, now deputy Gelderland of CDA.
Would be a good choice
sand farmer 11 September 2017
Klaas Dijkhof, bright guy
geert 12 September 2017
There is no VVD, at the VVD agriculture is neglected.
