United States (US) pork exports fell in July. However, beef exports did increase. This is according to figures from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Pork exports amounted to 173.675 tons in July. That is a decrease of 4% compared to the same period last year. The export is worth $488,9 million. However, total exports (January to July 2017) are still 11% higher than last year.
Pork to Mexico increased
Pork exports to Mexico have increased for the sixth time in a row. In the month of July, exports increased by 7% compared to last year. This brings the export in that month to 58.625 tons. The value of exports to Mexico also increased, by 9%, to $122,9 million.
Pork exports to Japan were quite disappointing in July. It fell 7% to 28.314 and reached a value of $120,5 million. That is also 7% lower than last year.
Beef exports increased
Beef exports show a different picture. Exports amounted to 104.488 tons in July, an increase of 5% compared to July 2016. In the first 7 months of this year, exports increased by 15% in volume to $3,97 million.
This increase was largely caused by the increasing demand for meat from Japan. Beef exports to Japan amounted to 27.680 tons in July. That is 20% more than last year. The export value also increased significantly, by 36%, to $175.7 million. That is the highest number since 1996.
