Outgoing Minister of Economic Affairs, Henk Kamp, supports the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to allow glyphosate for the next 10 years. Kamp thus follows the organizations that claim that the drug is safe. He announced this in a letter to parliament on Monday 11 September.
The European Commission will vote on the re-authorization of glyphosate in October at the earliest. The re-admission is based on a scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). It concludes that glyphosate is permissible and safe to use. There is no evidence that it can be carcinogenic.
Measures for surface water
The Board for the Authorization of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb) also contributed to the assessment and the other Member State authorities in the EU also expressed their opinion. They already announced in August that they would approve an extension of glyphosate.
The Ctgb agrees with the extension of the approval of glyphosate and considers an approval term of both 10 and 15 years acceptable. However, the organization believes that measures should be prescribed to protect surface water.
