Geurts to become agriculture minister

12 September 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk - 4 comments

Who should be the new Minister of Agriculture? That question asked Boerenbusiness Friday September 8 in a poll. In total, 1302 people gave their opinion.

From the poll of Boerenbusiness It emerges that people prefer to see Jaco Geurts (CDA) as the new Minister of Agriculture. No less than 39% of the votes went to him. Maurits von Martels also scores high. He received 24% of the vote, which puts him in second place.

Only CDA members for this post, otherwise no minister

CDA appears to be most popular
The poll also shows that the majority of voters (63%) opt for a CDA minister. The reactions show that the CDA keeps its back straight and in general is not bad for the agricultural sector.

In addition, it emerged that it is important that the CDA supplies the Minister of Agriculture. If that is not the case, some even say that there should be no Ministry of Agriculture at all.

Carla Dik-Faber of the ChristenUnie managed to get 14% of the vote. This puts her in third place. One of the responses shows that the ChristenUnie has a broader knowledge base than the other parties. That would make Dik-Faber a suitable candidate for the role.

VVD on 4 and 5
Helma Lodders (VVD) is in fourth place. She received 11% of the total votes. In an interview, however, she indicates that she has no need at all for a Minister of Agriculture. A number of reactions are therefore also saying that there is little chance that she will fulfill this role.

Uri Rosenthal (VVD) comes in fifth place and received 9% of the vote. One of the reasons he is unfit to be Minister of Agriculture has to do with his age. Rosenthal is now 72 and may not be able to complete the term.

Tjeerd de Groot (D66) appears to be the least popular among voters. Only 3% see him as the new Minister of Agriculture.

Candidate from business knows how to get things done

Other candidates
A number of new suggestions also emerged from the responses, such as Henk Bleker, Annie Schreijer-Pierik, Elbert Dijkgraaf, Sybe Schaap, Hennie de Haan and Klaas Dijkhof.

In addition, there were a number of people who would like to see someone from the business community as agriculture minister. Examples of this are Henny Swinkels, Jos van Kampen or Theo Hiddema. According to a number of people, they know how to get things done.

A number of people are also quite clear about who in any case should not become the new Minister of Agriculture. For example, people would rather not have Brinkhorst or Verburg fulfill this role.

The poll shows that people prefer to see Geurts as the minister of agriculture.

Too bad we let the knowledge disappear from the room and pin the people to a Government Agreement! Whatever that means with these four parties! who just can't stop talking, this is due to D66 or VVD, both of whom are also no longer aware of what is going on in agriculture.
Let's hope it becomes a good broader informed person with attention to all sectors and knowledge of EU rules. It is understandable that the Netherlands is raising the bar (Export country), but that information is not sufficiently highlighted for citizens who are differently influenced by political parties.

Give me also Elbert Dijkgraaf who still knows something about it.

with Geurts you know what you have: on the old foot with more of the same. More EU, globalization, scaling up. But whether the agricultural sector needs this to gain acceptance in society....
In that regard, the CDA (the farmers' mouthpiece) leaves a bad taste in the mouth of many citizens. The same citizens who believe that the sector receives a lot of subsidy while 1 in 5 millionaires in NL is a farmer.
But whether a more gifted Dijkgraaf would do it so much differently remains to be seen. Dik Faber has more feeling with society and with supporters
