How do you make a business takeover successful?

27 September 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 1 reaction

Business takeover in the agricultural sector is one of the most important events in the life of an agricultural entrepreneur. It marks the end, but also the beginning of an era in the lives of those involved. How can a business takeover be successful, instead of stressful?

By far the majority of company takeovers in the agricultural sector take place within the family sphere. This means that in addition to financial, fiscal and other practical aspects, social-emotional matters also play an important role. Your business and private life are strongly intertwined.

The human side is paramount

Experience shows that most attention is paid to 3 aspects: money, tax authorities and labour. Yet it is the social-emotional or human side that is of decisive importance in the success of a business takeover.

I am 65, have no successor and want to continue for a few more years. Is it wise to let a 'complete stranger' participate in my company?

Dear Leen, It is always wise to first clarify who you are dealing with. Do you fit together? Do you have the same vision? Do you make clear agreements? Do you allow this person the continuation of your life's work? To avoid a lot of misery, spend plenty of time preparing for collaboration, and continue to communicate well with each other...
