NVWA: vegetarian meatball is misleading

3 October 2017 - Wouter Baan - 16 comments

The Vegetarian Butcher has to think about new product names. According to the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), products such as chicken pieces and speckjes are misleading and in violation of the law.

This is reported by the Volkskrant. The NVWA gives the Vegetarian Butcher until March 2018 to provide the products with other names. If this is not done before that time, there is a risk of a fine. According to Niko Koffeman, co-founder of the Vegetarian Butcher, the meat industry is behind the allegations of the NVWA.

It is not the first time that vegetarian meat substitutes have been discredited. In 2012, the Vegetarian Butcher already had to make some name changes. Chopped was then changed to hacked. Since September, all product names stand for 'vegetarian'.

Although I'm not too concerned about it, I think it's right that he doesn't piggyback on the success of meat with his prepared vegetable slices

Still a bit crazy that there has to be a link (name) with meat otherwise it doesn't sell apparently

vegetarian butcher?? That guy is just a greengrocer!
If his products are that good he doesn't have to use meat-related names, then it went well

Another proof that the NVWA has butter on its head. How many products should I list that don't contain what's on the label? Banana custard that contains no banana, prawn crackers that do not contain shrimp, Surumi, or crab salad where egg strands and fake crab flavor are the basic ingredients.
The NVWA will be busy in the coming period. Because whoever says A must also say B.

It amazes me that this forum is being so moderately counteracted.
I'm glad his designations are finally being disapproved.
Together with that girl from The Hague, he has brought down meat production in the Netherlands for years. Abusing a product that you as a vegetarian abhor is not compatible. But 95% of the followers just eat chicken and pork, which are raised in the cheapest possible way.
And as a farmer I am happy with meat production, otherwise we could pack with our grain. Fortunately, the animal feed sector is pulling a lot of wheat from the market, thanks to meat production.

that bitch has already left him.
Didn't know what kind of meat she had in the tub either

chuckle. Meat producers? May it suffer that from now on meat simply gets the name of what it really is such as: killed animal, piece of carcass, cadaver, abused creature butchered for profit, food obtained from pure suffering and abuses that we try to cover up, etc. Let's be honest with each other ;)

The fact that the names have to be changed will not stop the success of meat substitutes and more conscious choices. You snooze, you lose. Start accepting, that's half the battle ;)

Well Tinus, then I have some news for you.
Without animal production, no vegetables, grains, etc., unless you accelerate the mining of the stored raw materials. Very social for posterity.
Moreover, the vast majority of the grounds are only suitable for the production of animal feed. And let's not forget what we are going to do with all the residual flows from our food industry.
So if you can't put the complete puzzle together, you can have strange ideas. Unfortunately, entire tribes only look at one puzzle piece.

Tell Tinus, I don't have eternal life, do you? When you were born didn't you almost let your mother die of pain?
You also don't wear leather shoes and don't eat anything that contains gelatin.
If your answer is no, then you are a guy who can speak his mind.
My question would be; what about your clothing, no fleece sweaters or viscose clothing, made from petroleum and polluting our natural cycle? So you never take medication, drive a car or travel by plane?
So I think you should blow off the tower a little less and first really delve into how nature works and how we as humans, including you, deal with our ecosystem! And don't fall into shouting from the school teacher that keeping animals is so pathetic, because then start a union against keeping pets, and to liberate the dogs that have to lie in far too small crates!!!

That's the height of hypocrisy. You continue to oppose the entire meat industry, throw all kinds of libel and slander into the air, but shamelessly piggyback on the success of meat products. Disgusting! It is also high time that those products (full of salts and flavourings) were thoroughly researched. I don't think that can be good for your health! At least I don't need that crap on my plate.

Once upon a time there was a pharmacist who had hazardous waste, the product is classified as hazardous waste with the name MOTHER LOGS/WASHING WATERS! the name was changed to sugar water for convenience and it was introduced into the food chain; with the MPA affair as a result.

Hi! It's me again! †

Number of answers:
Yes! I am vegan, so you do your best not to use animal products as much as possible. I also think that the abuses do not lie, ladies and gentlemen.

Death Eaters like: yes, but you're on medication! (I buy paracetamol from UK as there are no animal fillers in it), unfortunately animal testing is still going on. Totally correct! And driving is shit too. Unfortunately, being 200% vegan is impossible.
Then that horrible clincher about hurting my mother at birth. Listen, weirdo. (Because I sincerely think that of you). Your parents and mine (mine anyway, I don't know yours) have consciously chosen to switch to a pregnancy with all the knowledge about it (including the pain)
An animal doesn't choose, does it? You make that choice for the animal. Thunderbolt with such an example man. Are you going to do newspaper clippings or something?

Progeny: I would immediately assume that soil depletion is very tricky, I know a lot of people who are farming in permaculture and that is very tough I understand. I'm quite open to a healthy conversation about such a topic.

Then let's get to what it really was/is about: The name of products. That's what I was reaching for. Not to people individually. Of course I understand that you want to earn a living. But I sincerely think that the meat industry as it is now (and for some time already) should be curbed. Going vegan all over the world isn't going to work out and you know, that's not even my concern.

What concerns me is that there are fantastic alternatives that people can choose wisely. Vegetarian Butcher is not a term you can ignore. That the NVWA has done anything with this at all is a joke and luckily they realize that even after they were opposed by right-thinking citizens that they could not get away with it.

In terms of composition and substances in it, you run fewer risks than that filthy processed salami, ham and other processed meat products. So well, let's research it I would say! But then without the importance of the meat or vegetarian industry. Please let it be done independently so that we all get honest answers.

Have a nice day in any case, I chuckle heartily at this:

Selfish is the so-called world improvers not strange id. Unfortunately, with their sweet talk, they can always put the sector in a bad light. The agricultural sector lacks a very well-oiled propaganda counterpart. People are now continuously bombarded with the nonsense of the so-called environmental rascals.
