Countus Agriculture Index

Index chooses another direction

5 October 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The last week of August and the first 2 weeks of September seemed to be improving on the arable markets. However, the Countus Arable Farming Index is failing to maintain its upward direction in the second half of September.

The Index's upward trend direction is deflecting in mid-September. Although that costs points, the price still maintains above 60 points. Week 39 closes at 63.8 points. That's above the week 34 low when it touched 58.7 points.

6

euro

is the highest achievable for onions in September

Slight increase in potato forward contract
The potato market continues in September without significant pluses or minuses. The price of the potato forward contract for April starts the month at €7,30 per 100 kilos, after which you can add a few dimes. The highest price is reached on September 6: €8,10. Then something goes off again, but the contract will not go below €7.

Still little action on the onion market. Although exports continue reasonably well and growers experience some delays in harvesting and loading in September, the market does not really respond to this. Prices remain just above €5 per 100 kilos. On September 20, the €6 comes into view, but a week later, €0,50 has to be debited again.

Feed wheat above €170
The price line in EU fodder wheat does not show much movement in September either. In the first weeks, the price tends to be at €167 and €166 per tonne, but the month ends at €171. More clear is the fall in the Bintje seed potato price, which is below €1 per 30 kilos for the first time in more than a year. There is hardly any trade.
