Permission for glyphosate is still uncertain

6 October 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

The Member States of the European Union (EU) must take a decision as soon as possible on the authorization of the product glyphosate. It concerns an authorization for the next 10 years. Not all countries have taken a position yet. The Scopaff Committee reports this on Thursday 5 October.

The Commission, made up of representatives of the EU countries, discussed the authorization of the drug on Thursday evening 5 October. Member States are divided on admission for the next 10 years.

There is no reason to ban the drug

No run yet
The product may no longer be used after 31 December 2017. The Commission said that the authorization will not be extended without the necessary support from the Member States.

What does the Netherlands want?
The Netherlands has agreed to the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to allow the drug for another 10 years. Minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs sees no reason to change his position.

There are various reservations in the House of Representatives about Minister Kamp's position. France, Austria and Italy have already indicated that they will vote against the grant.

carcinogenic?
The EC has proposed to allow the drug for another 10 years. According to the European Food Safety Authority, there is no reason to ban glyphosate.

The opponents of the drug point to a study by the WHO (World Health Organization), which shows that the drug is carcinogenic. The European Food Safety Authority sees no reason for this.

The Scopaff Committee will meet again on October 23 to discuss further the possible authorization of the drug.
