The French sugar beet harvest has not been this high in 25 years. Cereal crops have also been upgraded.
According to the French Ministry of Agriculture, beet yields will increase by 1,5 million tons this season to 41.93 million tons. That is almost 6,3 million more than last year. The larger acreage, which was prompted by the disappearance of the European quota, and the higher yields are the cause of the increase.
Corn forecast increased
In addition to beets, yields of grains are also higher. The heat in August appears not to have had as much effect as expected. The forecast for corn has been increased by 291.000 tons to 13.04 million tons. However, this may still change because the harvest has just started.
Wheat quality good
The harvest of soft wheat is also higher. With an additional 149.000 tons, the French expect a harvest of 37.94 million tons. Although July rains damaged the crop in some areas, the quality of the harvest appears to be generally good.
