Which province has the most cultivated land?

21 October 2017 - Kimberly Bakker - 2 comments

Farmers own more and more land. This was revealed on Friday 13 October from new figures from Statistics Netherlands. But which province owns the most cultivated land? That gives a new top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, answer to.

This concerns a total of 1.038.764 hectares of cultivated land in the Netherlands. That number is spread over 47.247 companies, 1.813 of which own more than 75 hectares.

4.056

businesses

in Friesland own cultivated land

Who heads the list?
The list is amply led by the province of Friesland. This province owns 137.745 hectares of cultivated land. However, when it comes to the number of companies with cultivated land (4,056 companies), the province is in fourth place. This means that Friesland has relatively many companies with a lot of cultivated land, 317 companies own more than 75 hectares of cultivated land.

The province of North Brabant is in second place. That province owns 132.925 hectares of cultivated land. When it comes to the number of companies with cultivated land (8.464 companies), the province leads the list.

The province of Gelderland is on the lowest step of the podium. That province owns 125.335 hectares of cultivated land. And in that province, 8.194 companies own cultivated land. This puts the province in second place on that list. However, here too it means that most companies own little cultivated land. Only 79 companies own more than 75 hectares of cultivated land.

84

businesses

have 75 hectares or more in Overijssel

The numbers 4 and 5
The province of Overijssel falls just short of the mark and thus comes in fourth place. That province owns 122.637 hectares of cultivated land. However, the province is in third place in terms of the number of companies with cultivated land. That's because there are 6.332. Overijssel also scores low when it comes to the number of companies with more than 75 hectares of cultivated land. Only 84 companies own 75 hectares or more of cultivated land. This puts Overijssel in ninth place.

The province of Groningen comes in fifth place. That province owns 114.474 hectares of cultivated land. However, there are relatively few farms with cultivated land in this province, only 2.434 (tenth place). This does mean that many companies own more than 75 hectares. Groningen is therefore well at the top of this list (473 companies).

Striking things
It is striking that the province of Flevoland is not at the top of the lists. Earlier it turned out that the province many organic companies has in the province. However, when it comes to cultivated land, the province is in eleventh place, with only 38.571 hectares. The number of companies in that province with cultivated land is even lower (1.084), which means that Flevoland is at the bottom of that list.

The province of Utrecht is largely at the bottom of the list. The municipality owns 36.600 hectares of cultivated land. In that province, 1.978 companies own cultivated land, but only 21 companies own more than 75 hectares.

In the paragraph about the province of N-Brabant, the last sentence is incorrect.

Who really owns the most cultivated land in the Netherlands, the state, investment companies, banks, individual investors, or that farmer who can upholster and maintain it for a penny in the Netherlands? And is that farmer in a single case "in possession" of his land, how much of it is mortgage-free?

what a nonsense story, you look at return per year as an entrepreneur. As an investor for the long term. This is another state to stay employed and it doesn't add much value to entrepreneurship.
