Immediate import ban

Hong Kong bans eggs and poultry from Zeeland

17 October 2017 - Wouter Baan

Hong Kong will immediately stop importing eggs and poultry meat from Zeeland. This is because of the bird flu, which appeared in the province last week.

Last week bird flu (H5 virus) was found on a laying hen company in the Zeeland Sint Philipsland. In order not to endanger public health in Hong Kong, the authorities have decided to temporarily stop imports from Zeeland.

Million eggs
Hong Kong is a fairly important market and is often seen as the gateway to Asia. In the first half of 2017, Hong Kong imported 2.500 tons of poultry meat from the Netherlands. About 1 million eggs went that way during the same period, according to official food statistics from Hong Kong.
