The standard for the maximum amount of fipronil in chicken manure has been set at 5 micrograms per kilo of manure. Minister Henk Kamp (Economic Affairs) announced this on Tuesday 17 October.
The number is the lowest value that can be measured in a manure sample. All manure, with contents above 10 micrograms, must be removed and incinerated. Measurement uncertainty has already been taken into account. The same standard will be used in Belgium and Germany.
Insufficiently broken down
The contaminated manure must not be released into the environment. It is harmful to the animals in the water and to insects, according to research by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
The contaminated poultry manure must be incinerated, because fipronil is insufficiently broken down during composting or drying. The disposal and burning of this manure is very expensive.
