Revenue tripled

Consumers spend more on organic

20 October 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

Consumers spend more on organic products. In 2016, spending rose to €1,4 billion, an increase of 10% compared to 2015. Revenue has tripled compared to 10 years ago. This is apparent from the Trend Report 'Development of Organic Agriculture and Food in the Netherlands' by Bionext.

Supermarkets accounted for the largest share of this increase. Organic turnover there rose by 12,2% to €735 million. The largest increase is visible in the food service channels. That sector showed an increase of 14% to €187 million. However, the market share of the latter group is still lower than that of the supermarkets, 1% compared to 3,3%.

The total turnover of organic products has increased from €460 million in 2006 to €1.400 million in 2016.

Who provides the largest share?
Grocery products (juices, drinks, breakfast products, etc.) show the largest increase, namely 17,9%. The main reason for this is the better range of non-perishable products. In the early years, the focus was mainly on fresh products.

However, the product with the highest share is the organic egg (14,1%). Organic fruit and vegetables (potatoes, vegetables, fruit) and dairy have a share of 4,1%.

Switching companies
The switching companies are also important for these figures. In 2016, the organic acreage picked up again. That area increased by 3% to 58.442 hectares. In addition, the number of companies that are switching has also increased to 245 companies. More than half of those switching farms are dairy farmers.

Expectation is positive
The organic sector is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. This concerns percentages between 5% and 10%. This is due to the increased demand, but also due to the active policy of governments to support organic farming.
