Last week positive noises were heard in the onion market. There was more movement in the market. Enough has happened this week. Will the positive line that started last week continue this week?
This week it was again very busy on the fields. A lot of hard work has been done throughout the Netherlands to get the onions off the country on time. This has largely been successful. Positive reports are coming in from all over the country about onions that have been brought in. With the exception of a few, the harvest troubles are behind us. This is necessary, because the weather reports for this weekend indicate wet weather again.
busy
The positive trend that started last week has continued this week. There has been a lot more trade in the past 2 weeks. According to traders, more trade is being done across the board. Because Senegal's quota has been moved up, a lot of onions have been shipped to the African country in the last 2 weeks. This has created a new problem. In the port of Dakar congestion has arisen. The container depots are full of empty containers. A lot of product enters the country, but little goes out. As a result, the increased export volume is expected to fall slightly again.
Calm mood regional fairs
The fact that the exporters and sorters have been busier this week is not reflected in the quotations of the regional stock exchanges. The reason for this is that they have enough supply so far. Both Emmeloord and Middenmeer note a calm mood. This is in accordance with the stories that Boerenbusiness belongs. Although a little more is happening than in the previous weeks, the supply still exceeds the demand.
Both Emmeloord and Goes noted a negative difference of €41 in week 0,25 for the 30-60 millimeter onions from the land. For the 60 millimeters upwards on onions from land, Emmeloord records a negative difference of €0,50. Middenmeer does not notice any difference in price compared to last week.
The negative difference on the fine onions exchanges is not reflected in the bale prices. These remain the same as last week. According to a trader, the fine onions are getting more feet into the ground and will probably increase a bit in the coming weeks. For the middle sorting (45/65 millimeters and 50/70 millimeters) between €11 and €12 is paid. The bale prices for the coarse sorting (60/80 millimetres) are €14 to €16. Up to €80 is paid for the supers (20 millimeters upwards).
The positive line that started last week has continued somewhat. Exporters and processors have been busier and there have been slightly more transactions compared to previous weeks. Whether the problems in Dakar hinder this positive trend will become clear in the coming weeks.
