The division between Europe and the United Kingdom has little in the way of a flash division. The British remain vague about the divorce amount to be paid and Europe does not like that. This became apparent today, Friday 20 October, during a consultation of the EU summit in Brussels.
British Prime Minister Theresa May does not want to reveal how much the United Kingdom (UK) is making available to buy itself out. Brussels first wants to hear an amount before discussing future relations. Both sides do not give in, leaving the negotiations at an impasse.
Europe wants more clarity
According to EU negotiator Michel Barnier, Europe first wants clarity about civil rights and financial settlements. Only then does Barnier want to talk about a future (trade) relationship. Upon arrival in Brussels, May assured European citizens could continue to work in the UK post-Brexit. However, May does not want to name a divorce amount.
Negotiations on future trade relations have therefore been suspended. Initially, the intention was that Brexit would enter the next phase after today. Negotiations are expected to resume by the end of this year at the earliest. Both Europe and the United Kingdom agree that further delays are not desirable.
