Belgium does not yet have a position on glyphosate

20 October 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude - 1 reaction

With only a few days to go before the vote on the 10-year extension of glyphosate, Belgium is not yet out. Felt writes that the country has not yet taken a position.

Federal Minister for Agriculture, Denis Ducarme (MR), is said to have requested additional information from the European Commission (EC). Ducarne points out the importance of the file; both in terms of public health and the strong dependence on the agricultural sector.

Before taking a position, he wants answers from the European Commission. “I want to deal with this file as completely as possible, with a view to the decisions that have to be taken at European level. It would be wrong for the opposition to anticipate the Belgian position," said Minister Ducarme.

Ban for private persons
The private use of glyphosate is already banned in Belgium. Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels have announced a ban on its use. Phytofar, the Belgian Association of the Plant Protection Products Industry, has taken legal action against this decision.

It is against the fact that the regions usurp the right to ban the use of active substance-based products, while the approval of an active substance is a European competence and the authorization of a product is a federal decision.

Simply restrict the use of Glyphosate, eg max 1 litre/10ha/year for agr. businesses. Other agents are much more harmful, but the current price of Glyphosate encourages too much use. For public health protection, banning imports of Gen. avg. crops, where the crop itself is sprayed, and spraying a crop itself can be prohibited in the first place.

then list the harmfulness of the alternatives. Every drug has its impact on the environment (and I'm not exonerating glyphosate, far from it) but alternatives must have an advantage on both sides of the coin
