The grain yield per hectare in the Netherlands reached a peak in 2017. But which municipality has the largest acreage? That gives a new top 5 Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, answer to. 

There are 11.613 companies in the Netherlands that grow grain. In total, grain is grown on 181.103 hectares in the Netherlands. That brings the average per farm to 16 hectares.

Which municipality is at the top?
The largest area of ​​grain is located in the municipality of Oldambt (Groningen). 8.199 hectares of grain are grown in this municipality. This is spread over 118 companies, which amounts to an average of 69 hectares per company. 

In second place is the municipality of Sluis (Zeeland). 7.629 hectares of grain are grown in this municipality. This is spread over 405 farms, bringing the average per farm to 19 hectares. Compared to the rest of the Netherlands, that is relatively few hectares per farm.

In third place is the municipality of Terneuzen (Zeeland). 5.302 hectares of grain are grown in this municipality. This is spread over 305 farms, bringing the average per farm to 17 hectares.

The municipality of Eemsmond (Groningen) is in fifth and last place of this top 5. 4.969 hectares of grain are grown in this municipality. That number is spread over 138 companies, which amounts to 36 hectares per company.

If we only look at the municipalities with the largest hectare per farm, the municipality of Oldambt (Groningen) is still at the top of the list. This municipality had an average of 69 hectares per farm. However, the rest of the top 3 has changed.
