Good export figures miss battle for onions

The latest export figures for onions are available. It shows that a lot of effort has gone into marketing the onions all over the world. Just like last season, the battle for onions is missing on the purchasing side.

In week 39, the export figure for onions (based on preliminary information) amounts to 21.355 tons. This brings the counter for this season to 254.165 tons, which is 15.979 tons behind last season.

The difference with last season is negligible, related to the same number of export weeks. Especially when additional export information (2.546 tons) is also taken into account. The average weekly export figure for this season is 23.105 tons.

Ivory Coast in the lead in week 39

Who bought the most onions?
The largest buyer in week 39 was Ivory Coast, with 3.352 tons. That brings the season total to 34.895 tons. Senegal follows with 2.909 tons and has purchased 62.800 tons of onions this season. Indonesia is in third place, with 1.942 tonnes. That country has so far purchased 7.344 tons.

The lead of these top 3 compared to last season is striking. Until week 39, Ivory Coast had imported more than 25.300 tons of onions, Senegal 53.800 tons and Indonesia 6.149 tons. Great Britain is doing a lot slower this season, with 19.900 tons, than last season. At that time, more than 32.930 tons of onions crossed the Channel. Guinea is also 15.387 tons ahead of last season with 2.534 tons.

Not dissatisfied
The total export figure for this season should not be described as dissatisfactory. However, sales (looking at the destinations) are one-sided and rely heavily on Africa. So far, 112 countries have been served with Dutch onions, compared to 104 last season.The export figures are slightly behind last year.
