Never before has such a large amount of seed onions been produced in the Netherlands. This is apparent from the onion harvest estimate, which Statistics Netherlands published on Tuesday morning, October 31.

With a total of 1,513 million tons of onions, the 2017 cultivation year is at the top. On a cultivated area of 26.679 hectares, an average gross proceeds realized of 56,7 tons per hectare.

That is more than last season's 1,272 million tons (52 tons per hectare). To be precise, it concerns an extra 241.000 tons that will have to find its way onto the market. However, it does appear that the dropout rate will also be quite large this year.
