The Kremlin's tightened import ban is a setback for the meat sector in the United States (US). Thad Lively, vice president of the United States Bureau of Meat Exports (USMEF), told GlobalMeatNews.
According to Lively, the Russian market showed small signs of recovery. They are now thwarted by the extension of the import ban on live pigs and by-products, including the US and Europe. Lively: "The little bit of pork fat that the US shipped to Russia is now finally over."
Trade on his ass
Lively also says that the US is benefiting adversely from the import ban that Russia applies to the EU. Before the import ban went into effect in 2014, the US exported about $600 million worth of pork and beef.
Other agencies declined to comment. An American exporter said that exports to Russia have been halted for some time.
