Sugar content rising

Beet harvest for storage started

17 November 2017 - Niels van der Boom

Sugar beet growers have started harvesting for storage, Suiker Unie reports. These are beets that have to be delivered in December and January. The sugar content increased slightly again in the ninth campaign week, as did the percentage of tare.

Suiker Unie estimates that sugar beet will be produced everywhere in week 46 cleared† That was not always the case the week before. The harvest is gaining momentum, as more is now being harvested for storage.

60

procent

of the sugar beets has now been harvested

About 40% of the total area still has to be cleared. About 46% still has to be harvested on the northern clay soils, compared to almost 70% on the valley and peat soils. At the end of week 45, the counter stood at 58% (still to be harvested), compared to 46% last year and 52% in 2015. This is due to a significantly larger beet acreage.

sweet beets
The average sugar percentage in week 45 is 17,3%, which is slightly higher than last week. Texel and Limburg-middle/Peel score a content of 18%. The sugar content is slightly higher than in 2016. The WIN content remains stable; around 91.

The percentage of tare is also higher than last year; 11,5% on average in the ninth campaign week. In 2016 that was 1% less. The spread between ground tare is large. This varies from 16,6% in Southern Flevoland to 6% in Limburg.

No return orders
The additional seed order for 2018 will open next month. In 2018 it will no longer be possible to return beet seed. Under the right conditions, the seed can be stored very well, according to IRS research.
