24 November 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

Member of Parliament of the SGP, Elbert Dijkgraaf, has argued in the House of Representatives for an exemption from insurance tax for broad weather insurance. On Thursday 23 November, a vote was taken on Dijkgraaf's motion, which ultimately did not pass.

De broad weather insurance is intended to prevent farmers from getting into trouble due to extreme weather conditions. Dijkgraaf filed a motion to exempt the broad weather insurance from the insurance tax. This is to promote the use of the insurance.

Premium too high
"Despite subsidies, few farmers still use the comprehensive weather insurance. An evaluation report shows that the premium and the deductible are too high and this limits the coverage. For example, I note that in France, farmers with a comprehensive weather insurance are also exempt from the It is time for our farmers in the Netherlands not to fall behind, which is why an exemption should also be introduced here," says Dijkgraaf.

According to Menno Snel, State Secretary for Finance, the proposal does not comply with the so-called tax expenditure assessment framework. He also indicates in the debate that the disappearance of the insurance tax on broad weather insurance for farmers is anti-competitive.
