In order to be able to export sugar to other parts of the world, a sugar terminal is being built in the Polish port city of Gdansk. It is the first in the country and it gives exports a big boost.
The Port of Gdansk Authority and sugar producer Polski Cukier (Krajowa Spolka Cukrowa SA) signed the contract in mid-November for the construction of the terminal and the various transhipment facilities in the Polish port city. The terminal will be located in the part of the harbor where large ocean liners can easily dock.
Storage and processing
In addition to the transhipment facilities, the Polish producer will build a silo complex with 50.000 tons of storage capacity in the port city, set up a packaging line and a logistics center for the storage and transhipment of sugar products. This facility will have a capacity of 10.000 tons.
When the sugar terminal is ready, it will be the first in Poland. Polski Cukier hopes to be able to store and export about 75.000 tons of sugar (during the beet campaign). "Hopefully this will increase the annual import level to 300.000 tons of sugar," says KSC director Henryk Wnorowski.
The company now rents storage space and 1 silo in the port. That will soon be a thing of the past. The costs involved in transport, storage and transhipment are also reduced. The location can be supplied by both trucks and rail.
Not the only new construction
This year, a new sugar terminal was opened in Axel in Zeeland by the company Vlaeynatie. The capacity of this location is 80.000 tons of sugar. This mainly concerns imported sugar from other European countries, which is imported by train. The sugar is then loaded onto ships.
