'Still a lot of work to do'

Ready for Christmas action?

4 December 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), Carola Schouten, wants to complete the sixth Nitrates Directive action program before the Christmas recess. Schouten wrote this in a letter to the House of Representatives on Friday 1 December.

About 40 opinions were submitted for the sixth Nitrates Directive action programme. These are now being assessed and provided with a response. The advice of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) committee will be published shortly. Both can lead to adjustments in the action programme. These will have to be discussed with the European Commission (EC).

Height of the usage standard is still under discussion

Differences in plans
There are still some differences between the preferences of the EIA plan and the measures described in the published draft action plan. The differences concern, among other things, the implementation of the level of the phosphate application standard, the use of soil-improving fertilizers and the relaxation of the spreading period for solid manure.

Christmas as aspiration
After the discussions with the EC, the assessment of the views and the advice of the EIA, Schouten will complete the action program. She expects to do this just before the Christmas break. She wants to exchange ideas with the House of Representatives after the recess. "There is still a lot of work to be done, but I expect that this will improve quality and support", says Schouten.
