Belgian vegetable growers angry

'Retail is to blame for bad times'

7 December 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude - 9 comments

A higher price and a better compensation. Several Belgian vegetable growers, united in the General Farmers Syndicate, in an open letter to all retailers.

The growers are expressing their frustration about the terrible times they are currently going through. "Every day we ensure the supply of high-quality, strictly controlled vegetables. To our surprise, we have been paid below average for this in recent weeks and months. In other words: we produce your fresh vegetables with great love and commitment, but see that they are purchased. by your buyers at a price that is much too low. In addition, the products in your stores are sold at high prices, with a very large margin between the farmer's price and the consumer price."

Large margin between farmer price and consumer price

Sample reveals difference
"Leek is sold at Aldi for €1,45 per kilo, while the farmer is paid less than €0.20 per kilo. Celeriac is offered at Aldi for €0,99 each; we receive €0,11 per kilo. Colruyt sells savoy cabbage in advertising for €1.19 each. The grower's price is €1 lower, we get €0.19 each." The differences are even greater for Brussels sprouts and red cabbage, according to a sample of farmers.

Retail has no idea
It stings the Belgians everywhere; in cooking programmes, at the food consultant or in other promotion channels it is recommended to opt for seasonal vegetables, because they are healthy and on the market, but the retail attaches the concept of 'cheap' to it to win customers. According to the growers, the supermarkets have no idea how this lowest price strategy works. "But we are once again the victims of the incessant race for consumers."

Just like the retail sector, the farmers want to have a livelihood. "Via a living income! We demand a higher price for our products that meet all the specifications and the high quality standards that you impose on us. We demand better compensation for all the hard work, the many investments, often sleepless nights when we eat your vegetables irrigate and care, and for the many checks."

yes, and Belgium must now lead the way with this problem. In the Netherlands it is no different and grab potatoes from Albert h 1,29 in the advertisement.
nedato should add a price to the growers. a shame but Belgian farmers I support you. because the zlto doesn't do anything either.

Nedato is throwing growers out of the program at the moment.
Flevostar is bankrupt.
Most exporters and processors have a very hard time.
What does retail take off 10%.
Maybe we all just grow too much.
First it had to be global gap, now eco-label again.
And incur costs for the farmer.

All true what you are proclaiming here, but who can see through this. Who takes matters into their own hands and who dares to stand up and come forward with this problem?! We should not expect it from our LTO or ZLTO. I think we are too divided and preach to our own parish. I've been with the LTO for years and threw myself a dozen times to get up and tell the whole story on TV to a wide audience (the consumer). We have nothing to hide and can declare the real truth in a neat way! Retail is getting rich on the backs of all producers, and the consumer has absolutely no idea. With an open and honest story, prices, but also direct image, etc. can be made clear for everyone!

It is again a farmer from the ABS stable, who dares to call it man and horse. It is also ONLY and only the ABS that picks up and MEANS for the average farmer. The BB, with all their tame sheep, dozed off and with their backs against the wall, will probably again talk a lot from stalls, but the farmers sincerely help or dare to support, they can and WILL not. After all, vegetables are also sold in all AVEVE centers.

A farmer is created and treated like a cow: from milking until they are milked...worldwide and of all times.
shopkeeper 7 December 2017
it is not so much with the shopkeeper we only run 18 percent on fresh produce but it is with the auction and intermediate trade per box at the auction if you already pay 1,50 then the price of cauliflower and for us as a shopkeeper also the between trade because smaller numbers are not delivered from the auction
go after that instead of directly blaming Retail Campina exactly the same story in times when dairy has to be produced ridiculously cheap, they only introduce price increases through 16 packs of butter, my purchase comes to 49 euros, so again the intermediate trade that makes absurd profits
xavier 7 December 2017
to put the blame on the retail sector is simplistic the flemish farmers stand in line and some wave with money in order to get a contract with the various frozen food factories because they all have (too) many cheap workers and of course they have to work enough have. That is the core of the problem , in particular unlimited cheap labor .
In the past, the factories were asking to grow vegetables and now it is the other way around if you are just sawing to get a contract and want to constantly expand how can you enforce a decent price.
We are just killing ourselves and it is not the first time in our sector;
hans 10 December 2017
the fault lies with the retailer who always make absurd profits on fruit and vegetables.excuse me but 18%... you should not make more than 5%. we as growers turn 10% minus that is because that is what they need to lure customers over the back of the grower just outrageous the whole healthy market operation killed them with a lowest price guarantee / 2 get 1 pay / hoarding etc. all wrong action everything the lazy can pass on 300% and the farmer lowest in the chain but the most important who gets half the crumbs if he is lucky this can't go on any longer. 1 week all shops empty look how loud they beep. .
shopkeeper 10 December 2017
Well Hans join us for a few weeks then you should no longer make agreements with the large chains and think a bit more locally the large chains make everything according to his grandma
