Countus Arable Farm Index

Low market pushes grower into survival mode

11 December 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The Countus Arable Farm Index fell through the 60-point mark in November. This brings the index to its lowest level in more than 10 years.

With an average figure of 59.5 points, the number of index points has fallen below the 60-point mark. In week 47, the lowest level was tapped: 58.30 points. That is even less than in week 34, when arable prices were also lousy. Almost all crops included in the index are in bad shape and that got a bit worse in November.

Index at lowest level in more than 10 years

Price trend potatoes and onions
French fries potatoes, for example, fell further on the futures market. October started at a level of €7 per 100 kilos. At the start of November, almost €2 is off. In mid-November the price was € 4,50 per 100 kilos, later it rose again to €5. The onions showed a different course. In mid-October, the stock market price rose from €5 to €6,50 per 100 kilos, but fell again at the end of November to €5,25 per 100 kilos.

The price of feed wheat remains above €170 per ton, while that is not possible for seed potatoes. The price there is at the same level at the end of September to mid-November, but the second half of November still has to take a step back. In short, sober crop prices, which push arable farmers into survival mode.
