Poultry farmers empty-handed after fipronil crisis

20 December 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

Elbert Dijkgraaf (SGP) submitted a motion last month in which he asked to look for possibilities to support poultry farmers affected by the fipronil affair. This motion was rejected on Tuesday 19 December.

Dijkgraaf requested that an investigation be carried out as soon as possible with regard to compensation, but without this being regarded as state aid. He hereby specifies the costs of destroying clean and contaminated eggs, culling and moulting poultry, the removal of contaminated manure and the costs of sampling and testing.

No support for Dutch poultry farmers

He also asked the government to provide an indication in the short term of the total financial damage † The motion was supported by 50PLUS, the PVV and FvD, but did not win a majority.

Belgium does support
Poultry farmers in Belgium are compensated for the damage they have suffered. The European Commission recognizes that the fipronil crisis is an exceptional event and does not object to the aid measures.
