Cosun estimates that the sugar beet campaign for the 2017/2018 season will end on 8 February. In the meantime, three quarters of the beets have been processed in Groningen and Dinteloord. The harvesting has not yet been completed. Just under 2.000 hectares has yet to be harvested.
The most recent data from Suiker Unie shows that on 1 January, 2% of the acreage was still in the ground, good for more than 1.700 hectares of sugar beet. With 6%, most of the harvesting work still has to be carried out in North and South Holland. On the Zeeland islands, in West Brabant and the Noordoostpolder, 4% is still in the ground. The entire area has only been cleared in East Brabant.
Less sugar
In the sixteenth campaign week, the sugar content fell slightly to 16,6%. This equates to the fifth campaign week. The levels do not exceed 17%. Almost all of them fluctuate between 16% and 17%.
The percentage of tare has also decreased, to 13,44%. That is 1% less compared to the week before. However, the clay areas show outliers of up to 20%. The WIN number remains stable.
Frost and rain
In the meantime frost is looming again, although no more than a light night frost is currently expected. Cosun therefore calls on you to make preparations for covering beet heaps. Frozen beets are lost beets, it says. Real winter weather doesn't seem to be making an appearance. A bigger problem is the persistent and heavy precipitation in the Netherlands. This makes it difficult to get the last sugar beets out of the ground properly.
