The Dutch agricultural sector once again exported agricultural products abroad for more money in 2017 (compared to 2016). This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands and Wageningen Economic Research.
The export value of Dutch agricultural products rose to €2017 billion in 91,7. That's 7% more than in 2016 and a new record. This increase is mainly caused by the growth of the export value, especially of dairy and meat, and therefore not by an increase in the export volume.
The export value of dairy increased by 2017% in 21. The higher milk and butter prices resulted in a growth in the export value in the dairy market. Meat prices were also higher in 2017, resulting in an increase in the export value (+6%).
Dairy products have surpassed meat in the CBS ranking and the products are in second and third place respectively. The list is led by the floriculture sector. However, the difference with the dairy is still minimal.
Less export to UK
Most exports take place to Germany (€10,4 billion), Belgium (€8,6 billion) and France (€8 billion). Exports to these countries increased in 2017 compared to 2016. Exports to the United Kingdom (UK) barely increased. The approaching Brexit and, as a result, the unfavorable exchange rate may have something to do with this. Dutch exporters seem to be strengthening their positions in other European countries, at the expense of those in the UK.
Statistics Netherlands and Wageningen Economic Research conducted this research jointly, on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. Minister Carola Schouten presents the figures on the Green Week in Berlin.
