300 hectares of sugar beets to be harvested

19 January 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

Cosun reported on Thursday 18 January that there are still beets in the ground on about 300 hectares. However, it is doubtful whether these will all still be harvested. In particular in North and South Holland and the Northern sand region, the harvest still has to be done.

The quality of the beets stabilized in the eighteenth campaign week, compared to campaign week 17. The average sugar content was 16,4% and the tare percentage was 13,9%.

The highest sugar content was achieved on Texel, namely 17%. This while the content in the Bommelerwaard/Betuwe remained at 15,3%. The differences in the tare percentages are even greater, with peaks in the Kop van Zuid-Holland (19,8%), compared to 8,3% in the Kempen.

frost damage
The frost at the beginning of this week caused damage to unprotected beet heaps in the northeast of the Netherlands. Therefore, growers have to remove the affected beets by scraping the beet heap, Cosun said.

There is a chance of night frost again next weekend. Cosun advises growers to maintain or even reapply the frost protection.
