Shifts in the potato industry
Breeding is one such development that will shake up the potato industry. The expectation is that in 2037 the Netherlands will shift its focus to the high-tech end product. Potato production is partly shifting to other parts of the world, where rice fields are making way for potato fields.
Moreover, in 2037 we will no longer be able to ignore 'next generation genetics', or DNA modifications, which improve product qualities and the resistance of potato varieties. In this way a variety is developed for every climate that grows perfectly there. And there will also be potatoes that exactly meet the demands of consumers and processors. In taste, shape and size. We keep going further in this. How far is not yet clear, but is already a topic of discussion within the chain.
Breeding is only 1 of the developments that will cause shifts in the potato sector. And: a lot has already been done, but there is still a lot more to come.
