More than 57.000 hectares

Largest arable farm in Europe for sale

15 February 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 5 comments

The Romanian arable farm Agricost, which cultivates more than 57.000 hectares of land, is for sale. The value of the company is approximately €200 million. Investors from Germany, England and Saudi Arabia are lining up to buy the company.

Cereals are mainly grown on the more than 57.000 hectares. The company farms most of an island in the Danube River. Agricost has an enormous grain storage facility under its own management; even the ferry that belongs to the island is owned by the company.

Valuable land
Agricost's land is very valuable because it is equipped with multiple irrigation systems. As a result, thousands of euros extra can be produced per hectare. The average yield of the plots is almost twice as high as the average in Romania as a whole. The average price per hectare is estimated at €2 per hectare.

It is still unclear whether the sale can be completed in the short term. This is because the land may be owned by the State. However, a Romanian farmer is clear: "If I had the money, I wouldn't think twice and buy the company."

thousands of euros more per hectare thanks to irrigation. Please let me know which crops those are. Crops that can score higher will certainly be there. There must also be sales for it and that is often the problem there. The Romanian peasant mentioned is probably a wise man.

If it's such a gold mine why are they selling then I wonder.
If they split the case, it might bring double that.
The problem with a huge company is that the overhead costs are too high due to too many people who perform too little and have too high a salary.
Moreover, a farmer's heart is often missing.
