Beet campaign breaks records

16 February 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 9 comments

Cosun's beet campaign ended on Saturday 10 February. The figures show that a record yield of 15,6 tons of sugar per hectare was achieved last year. This breaks the previous record from 2014 (15,1 tons of sugar per hectare).

The carrot yield also reached a record high (93,5 tons per hectare). The average sugar content was 16,7%. The tare percentage over the entire beet campaign was 12,5% and the extractability index (WIN) ended at 90,8.

Regional figures
Uit the regional figures Cosun shows that Texel is the only area where the sugar content has exceeded 17% (17,1%). The areas of West Brabant South, Noord-Beveland, Groningen (peat) and Drenthe (sand) follow with a sugar content of 16,9%

The highest tare percentages are for the areas of Groningen (18,7%), Kop van Zuid-Holland (16%), Haarlemmermeer (15,7%), Southern Flevoland (15,4%), Hoeksche W/IJsselmonde (15,4 %) and Central Brabant (15%).

External influences
Last year's long campaign had an impact on the sugar content. In the last few weeks, the content has fallen again, which has led to a fall in the average. Incidentally, the length of the campaign also set a record. It was the longest ever. The factory in Vierverlaten had the longest campaign with 152 days (from September 11 to February 10).

In addition, the wet autumn influenced the tare percentage, but also damage to beets was a consequence. Both parts were not optimal for preservation.

In 100 years still no beet with a higher sugar content. In the 1917-1918 campaign of the Friesch-Groningsche Cooperative Beetroot sugar factory in Groningen, the sugar content was 16,85%. In the Northern Netherlands beetroot sugar factory in Vierverlaten it was 17,17% that year. At the beetroot sugar factory “Frisia” in Franeker, the annual average in 1921-1922 was even 18,03%

Yes Jan that is nice info and does not seem so spectacular but if you look at the sugar yield per ha. go and see, there is indeed something going on.
We see the same with protein in wheat or starch in potatoes, for example, hardly any changes but much more quantity per ha.

would be more sustainable, select/develop varieties with a high sugar content (>20%) and consider the barrels less important?

That seems to me to be the dream of every breeder Fred.

pulp has value too, right?

we all do nothing with it it only works against ourselves if we all harvest 65 tons of beets and 43 tons of bintje per hec we were very satisfied bottom line now it is double but an empty wallet is a very bad thing

The variety BTS605 had with me a nice sugar content of 18,84 and 92 win.
Unfortunately, this breed is no longer on the list.

I also had good results with 18.32 sugar and a win of 91.6 with 90.5 tons of paid beet.
why is this breed no longer available

Florena, 120 tons paid beet with avg. 17% sugar. Delivered November and January. Best balance with that thick custodial fee. In any case, better than onions of a penny or 7 to 8.

The beet plant may not be able to make a much higher sugar content than it is now, maybe 2-4% more
The tons have increased from 100 to about 35 in 100 years.
Transport and processing costs per tonne and per ha. are getting higher.
35 tons with 49% sugar was much nicer but Utopia.
Does anyone know what the highest sugar percentage achieved in a batch of beets has ever been?
Too bad such a breed as BTS605 does not survive.
