Tereos, France's largest sugar beet processor, has completed its best campaign yet. During the 145 campaign days, more than 20 million tons of beets were processed, an increase of 30% compared to the previous harvest.

tereos is the largest player on the French sugar market. The 12.000 cooperative members jointly cultivated 2017 hectares of beet in 215.000, considerably more than the entire Dutch acreage. The average yield is 95 tons per hectare, which is a record. The total harvest amounts to more than 20 million tons, an increase of 30%.

Invest heavily
The company currently has 9 factories in France. Since 2010, the company has invested €500 million to prepare it for this achievement in its first quota-free year.

As with competitor Cristal Union, the company focuses on long-term storage. More can therefore be stored at the factories. Another ambition is to be more flexible with sugar and ethanol production, so that a volatile market situation can be better anticipated.

Export
In the run-up to the last campaign, Tereos opened a new logistics center in Escaudœuvres, near Cambrai. From here, 500.000 tons of sugar per year is transported in containers to Dunkirk, Antwerp and Rotterdam, and a portion is shipped mainly to Africa.

At the end of January, Cristal Union already made known to have processed 30% more beets. This company processed a total of 17 million tons of beet from 180.000 hectares.
